Earlier today, during the telecast of the 82nd Oscar Awards, the next trailer for Iron Man 2 was unveiled to the world.

It features the following wonderful bullet points!

Mickey Rourke sticking to his dirty/grimy character stereotypes!

Don Cheadle blazing guns as War Machine!

Scarlett Johansson using what looks like a whirlwind DDT on some poor unsuspecting guard! (Or is that not so poor?)

Portable Iron Man armor!

Samuel L. fucking Jackson as Colonel Nick fucking Fury!

The trailer is nothing short of intriguing to say the least (and explosive to say a lot), so it’s pretty safe to say it does its job extremely well. I am looking forward to this movie. With much delight.

When I saw the first teaser for this movie, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go see it, especially since M. Night Shyamalan has lately been focused on making weird movies with plots I can’t understand.

But after seeing the new trailer… wow.

Coming July 2!

UPDATE: The whole whitewashing issue has only recently been brought to my attention by my friends. I haven’t really heard about this problem before I watched this specific trailer, but that points more to my (past) ignorance of the whole situation rather than the gravity of it.

Honestly though, even though I probably should be bothered, given that the world of Avatar is decidedly Asian (or Chinese to be specific), I’m not. Think what you will of that. I still plan on watching the movie when it comes out.

In a case of wanting to see both movies before they’re gone from the cinemas, Ice and I decided to watch both of them yesterday, one after the other. A real movie marathon, with popcorn, surround sound and theater seats. The works.

It was one of those days where I really got the most value out of my money.

Inglorious Basterds

The movie screams Quentin Tarantino. From the quirky music to the comedic handling of blood and gore, it’s like a mashup of his previous movies Pulp Fiction and Grindhouse, but now in a setting of Nazi-occupied France. It’s funny, irreverent and violent. Very, very much so.

Avatar

Despite it being a victim of over hype, I still believe Avatar is one of the better movies this year, if only for the envelope-pushing it does on the front of CGI. Characters moved very fluidly, even when the action was quick and frantic. At some points in the movie I even thought I was watching animatronics instead of computer graphics.

Plot-wise it could have been better, since the story was a bit cliché and the characters were too one-dimensional for their own good (including, as my friends call him, Col. Badass), but geniunely, there were times when I was moved by what I saw on screen. Probably a sense of guilt for being a human.

And now onto the coming attractions. Robert Downey Jr. has been busy these past two years, fighting alcoholism and people forgetting about him, and clawing his way back into the spotlight.

Sherlock Holmes

Two words: Rachel McAdams. Even if some of the stuff seems out of place – RDJ’s accent, the casting of Jude Law as Watson and not as Sherlock Holmes himself – I’ll be watching it. Because of Rachel McAdams.

Just not on Christmas Day.

Iron Man 2

And finally, we have one of the most awaited sequels in a while, because the first one was successful in whetting people’s appetites. Iron Man 2′s trailer shows the usual guns-blazing, high-flying, arrogant-but-likeable Tony Stark alongside his new partner, War Machine.

Hell yeah!

For its 20th anniversary, Empire reunites actors and actresses with their iconic Hollywood film roles. The gorgeous portrait and set shots include Mel Gibson as William Wallace, Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator and Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, among others.

Very cool.

I was watching Ong-Bak for the first time a while ago, and I came across the alley chase scene. Those who’ve watched the movie before will already know what the fuss is about, but for those who haven’t, thankfully YouTube exists. It has the protagonist, played by Tony Jaa, jumping through hurdles (aka crowds of people), and slipping through some very tight spaces. Watch your jaw.

It has style, it has action, it has good choreography, it has the cheesy slow-mos and the multiple-angle shots. The scene has it all. I read that they did this without wire-fu, which makes it doubly amazing. It makes you think about just how much body control Tony Jaa has in order to pull this off, which brings up obvious comparisons with the greats like Jackie Chan. Still, I think the hailing of Jaa as the next great martial arts movie star has some merit to it, because clearly he has some sick moves.

On to Ong-Bak 2!
